Chiropractic FAQ

Shiatsu is a very gentle bodywork style that can be practiced on people across age and health spectrums – from small children to the elderly and folks that are feeling physically weak or frail

However, there are some specific conditions that Shiatsu is not beneficial for, If you think you have any of the conditions listed here, please contact me and I would be happy to discuss with you whether shiatsu treatment is an option for you, and, if not, what other modalities may be more suitable.

Acute infections (fever, flu, cold)

Acute injury (newly broken bones, newly dislocated joints)

Acute inflammation (appendicitis, peritonitis)

Acute poisoning

Malignant tumors

Ulcers (gastric, duodenal)

Immediately after surgery

Shiatsu is rooted in TCM. In a shiatsu treatment, you will always receive a full body treatment (legs, arms, torso, head). This holistic approach allows us to diagnose and treat the root cause so that we can restore and balance the ki of the body.

Instead of kneading or rubbing, perpendicular pressure is applied and feels deeply penetrative when applied to tsubos, or acupuncture points.

Shiatsu works because it helps to calm our sympathetic nervous system, the ‘fight or flight’ mode, by improving circulation of blood which helps to release stiff muscles, while activating your parasympathetic nervous system, the ‘rest and relaxation’ mode, which alleviates stress and encourage deeper and more regular breathing and overall relaxation.

Yes — in fact shiatsu can sometimes help shorten or shift your cold.

Yes but we do not recommend strenuous exercise as this may negate the relaxed state you have achieved after shiatsu.

Not really but if you can keep the rest of your day relatively stress free then that will increase the benefits and effects of your treatment

No — just ensure that you arrive in plenty of time for your appointment so that you are relaxed and can get the full benefits of your treatment.

A case history taking current and past medical history including family history where relevant. A palpation examination of the abdomen, back, points and channels. A face, tongue and pulse examination as well as an analysis of your posture. This will be followed by a treatment.

It depends. If you are “running on empty‘ and feeling very stressed then the shiatsu will relax you so that your underlying tiredness surfaces and your reactions will be slower. Conversely, many people feel invigorated and refreshed after a treatment and their reactions will actually be faster as they are more alert yet relaxed.

Rarely. Dizziness can sometimes occur as a result of rest and relaxation experienced during the treatment or if you have a propensity to dizziness such as low blood pressure.

Only in a welcome way — you will be more aware of the relief from pain rather than the pain itself. The practitioner will only apply the correct amount of pressure that allows you to stay relaxed and enjoy the treatment.

No — please dress comfortably with loose clothing that covers the whole body including long sleeves and socks

Even in a semi-private , you will be given as much attention to your form, breath, and modifications for conditions as a private student would. That is the beauty of limiting the number of students in Pilates. This concentration of attention will lead to a quicker progression in the work and in your body.

You can practice Pilates nearly every day without overtraining, but for the best balance of your time, real progression, and budget, Pilates 2-3 times a week is just about perfect

In many of the exercises, you will be upside down with your legs moving through the air. The last thing you want to do while in these positions is fight with your clothes! Think snug. Ladies, try exercise tights or yoga pants. Guys, longer shorts or athletic spandex boxers under your shorts  work very well! Wear a longer, close-fitting exercise top. If you would prefer, layer a looser fitting top over the snug one. It’s both trendy and less revealing!

At home or in the gym you are most likely passive stretching since you are using your body weight and/or gravity to pull a muscle into a longer state. Pilates utilizes “active-dynamic” stretching in its exercises. An “active” stretch is when you contract a muscle that is opposite to the muscle that you are trying to stretch, like tightening your quadriceps while you stretch your hamstrings. An “active-dynamic” stretch is when you contract the opposite performing muscle while moving the target muscle throughout its full range of motion without stopping. You’ll become more flexible more quickly with active-dynamic stretching and it will last longer.

With your doctor’s blessing, you can start and/or continue your Pilates practice all the way to delivery! Starting the fifth month of gestation, your exercises will be modified so that you will never lie flat on your back or perform movements that might put you off-balance or overstretch your loosening hips. Toward the end of your pregnancy, if you are in a semi-private, you will be asked to continue your Pilates in a private setting for very specific, late pregnancy exercises that are not only safe, but may help with the physicality and endurance required while you are in labor.

Pilates is an incredibly safe, non-impact exercise. Your first session will include a consultation discovering history, current physical conditions, and goals along with functional and postural assessments in order to appropriately program your sessions. While performing the movements, your form, spring resistance, and range of motion, might be modified to keep you injury-free and moving forward in the work. It should be noted, however, that if you are under a doctor’s care for any recent injury or surgery, you should consult with your healthcare professional before you begin.

It’s ok! You are not expected to be flexible when you first start Pilates. Since Pilates is a progressive practice, you will start with exercises that are more gentle and will slowly work on lengthening your muscles, eventually performing the movement with the ideal form.

No other method of exercise can do what Pilates can do for a body. Besides the flattened, toned abs that you will have no option but to develop, your entire body will lengthen, become more flexible, and get stronger. You will improve your balance, as balance is naturally built into so many of the exercises. Pilates helps to prevent injury and will rehabilitate you if you’ve sustained one. You will breathe deeply, increase your circulation, and reduce your stress. You will experience relief with back pain, become more body aware, and find that you are able to concentrate so much better throughout your day!

Pilates is intelligent exercise with profound results. It is mind and body conditioning with a repertoire of more than 500 systematic exercises that work the body gently but effectively. Pilates addresses the needs of everyone spanning from post-rehabilitation to the elite athlete. Pilates emphasizes concentration, control, centering, breathing, flow, and precision. Moving slowly, the focus is on quality, not quantity. The abdominal muscles, lower back, and buttocks serve as the center of all movement, allowing the rest of the body to move freely. This focus on core stabilization creates a stronger body from the inside out. The balance between strength and flexibility creates a healthy, vigorous, and symmetrical workout for all muscle groups resulting in a leaner, more balanced, and stronger body.

Pilates is a progressive exercise method that strengthens while lengthening muscles. The beginner and intermediate work are gentle yet extremely effective. The advanced work is challenging and requires a great degree of shoulder and core strength, balance, flexibility, and experience. Pilates is a great complement to your already existing fitness routine or it can BE your fitness routine. Just remember, as with any fitness regimen, fitness and progression come with practice and consistency. You should be training your body at least 3-4 times a week with a combination of resistance and cardio work.

Most massage oils will not damage your clothing. If you have any concerns, bring a comfortable set of clothes to put on afterward. A well-trained therapist can design a session that does not mess up your hair or make-up.

Of course, but plan on enough time to readjust. Be aware that your perception of motion (driving, stairs, distances may be “off” for 20 minutes or so after the session). Also, realize your relaxed state may bring your feelings close to the surface.

Remember that massage therapists are professionals who are sensitive to possible client issues with touch and are non-judgmental about your body weight, amount of hair, skin conditions, scars, disabilities, medical conditions, or personal history of trauma.

Yes, it is okay to talk, but you may get more benefits from a relaxation massage if you let go of your everyday worries or concerns.

However the therapist will understand. They are trained not to talk about themselves during your session, but will simply answer your questions with a yes or no.

If your session is rehabilitation-based, the therapist will need to stay in constant contact with you regarding pain levels and measuring relief. Because it’s important that you offer specific feedback to the therapist, she may keep talking to keep you from drifting off.

Therapeutic Massage for acute and chronic injuries or full body stress reduction. Each time you come in for a massage your therapist will design an individually tailored treatment to suit your body and your needs. Please let us know if you have any preference in deep tissue or lighter treatments. Our therapists always work with a pressure that is comfortable for you.

It depends. You might be having a day filled with emotions: sadness, joy or exhaustion. Sometimes the safe touch, music that brings up memories, dates that are linked to events, or the smell of the massage oil may release feelings. The body can react by crying, laughing, or “shivering from cold.” The mind can also become absorbed in the feelings rather than the massage. Your therapist will simply ask if you are okay to continue receiving touch and given your answer, he or she will monitor how you are doing and adjust the session goals accordingly. For example, he or she may shorten the time, change the strokes or the music or add more draping.

Yes, massage therapy is safe in all stages of pregnancy, though techniques and positioning are modified. If you have a condition you think limits you from having massage, give us a call and discuss it with us, as you can often continue getting massage with most conditions, with modifications to the treatment.

Yes, children can benefit from chiropractic care. It is a highly skilled treatment, and in the case of children, very gentle.

Good chiropractors do everything in their power to help their patients feel better as fast as possible with as few chiropractic treatments as necessary, ultimately reducing care to an as-needed follow-up plan. They also give advice on how to avoid future problems by evaluating lifestyle activities, ergonomics, posture, orthotics, and/or diet.”
During your first consultation with a chiropractor, ask them about their estimate for a treatment plan upfront. A good chiropractor will work with you to make sure that you get the care you need, without the added expense of unneeded visits.

Typically, side effects may include minor soreness at the area of treatment

Chiropractors focus on the restoration of spinal alignment

Chiropractors are  doctors who use hands-on spinal manipulation and other alternative treatments, the theory being that proper alignment of the body’s musculoskeletal structure, particularly the spine, will enable the body to heal itself without surgery or medication. Manipulation is used to restore mobility to joints restricted by tissue injury caused by a traumatic event, such as falling, or repetitive stress, such as sitting without proper back support.
